Facelift instrument cluster in predacelift EJ9

Hi,
anyone know if there is any issues with dropping a Obd2b cluster into a obd2a car?
I got a EK9 cluster from a 2000 model and installed it in my 96 EJ9. Everything works, besides the tachometer.
I know the rpm signalpath for the tachometer is different in the 99-00 cars then the 96-98, with rpm signal going by the ECU before it goes to the tachometer in the 99-00, but it's the same pin location on the tachometer side, so I can't see that it should make any difference if the signal comes straight from the distributor or if it made a detour first.
The tachometer could be damaged of course, though there is no indication of such.
