Timing marks and setup on D14??

Post by pardizzle21 »

Having just done the vtec head and obd1 swap, with the car running fine(I think) i'v found myself questioning if iv set the timing right... :? :? The obd1 swap article has given me cause for concern!
Even though it feels like you'v read the info on this site a million times over, its diferent went you go to do the real thing!!

1-Crank-I used the 4th mark( TDC)-now I think the obd1 swap is saying it should of been on the approx 14 degree mark??

2-Cam-I have set it wrong(advanced a tooth)

3-dizzy is set in stock position( ie with even amount of adjustment to advance or retard)

Can somebody confirm the correct overall timing?

Sux when its the first time you'v ever done this type of work!

ALL sorted now

-cam gear is now set as close to the marker/7oclock at TDC as we could get it,its still advanced around half a tooth tho...
So i will retard the camshaft positon to correct this.

-Ignition timing has been done using a timing gun, it was 8 degrees out!

car seemed much better running, just needs the remap now :)

Yeah the markers never line up 100% I must admit. But is the 7o'clock marker now in the position which matches best? You can only miss align per complete tooth. So the 7o'clock can actually never be away a half tooth (either advanced or retarded), only a full tooth. So probably you got it pretty much right?

Though I came across one D14 stock engine once which was off exactly a half tooth... , saw it with my own eyes. I still don't understand. It seems the crankshaft gear can have different aligning or something very very weird.

hey dodo,
to be honest I couldnt understand either, correct cam gear and belt.but it was either slightly retarded or slighlty advanced no matter what we did....(your problably correct half tooth)

Made the adjustment to the cam gear, and car runs much better.still needs a remap though, but is running very surprisingly well!!
I was expecting car to run like a bag of shite with stock ecu! :)
