Why did you choose the D14 head over the D16 one? I think it has been said before that they are very similar (like you just mentioned). Unless the D16 head is damaged.

My goal is to build a simple free revving motor that has enough go to be fun, I don't need/want ultimate performance. I'm fortunate enough to own a number of cars one of which will eat any Civic I know of for breakfast. The plan is to use a D13/14 block for it's bore/stroke ratio. A D16 head for it's (slightly) better valve size. A better inlet manifold and/or forced induction. Two rules:- any mod must be cheap or free, any mod that isn't cheap or free must be an original concept that I personally bring to realisation. At the moment I have a civic D16Y7 with a burnt valve and iffy valve guides and a cheap complete D14A4. The short term fix was to use the D14 head on the D16 already in place BUT the longer term plan is to use the remaining components to create the motor I want.
Fast, reliable, cheap. Pick any two - because you won't get all three!

The valves size is same on D14a3/4 and D16y7/8 etc.
Even the exhaust valves are the same with current Accord ones.
Also the Sohc Vtec D16 on EG Civics 1995 have the same valves with D14a3/4

Hi Betek. I know that civics with 300+ BHP do exist but they are like golden eagles; very rare, hard to find and I aint never seen one in the wild! Thanks for the info on valve sizes, it contradicts my research but I will take my hat off to your greater knowledge.

Yes 300 bhp Civics are rare, I know a couple of them... there once was the Jamex Civic, a prepped demo car with D16Y7 engine, turbo... several secret ingredients and 307 bhp if I remember correctly. Car is now 'hidden' somewhere in NL I hope, but I know the performance has aged... want to get my hands on it one day and open up the engine. It was built in 1999 if I remember correctly.
For the rest on the strip you have a lot of Civics with such horse power, especially B16 engines with basic turbo get there easily and pretty reliable. I also know a 850 bhp Civic... reliability? A well, not for it's tranny at least.
But any brand can be turned to a hot rod given enough time and money. Most reliable Civics I know of top out just over 200 bhp.

Sebastix for example! 200hp with stock internals but great tuning as far as i can tell.

If I can get past 130bhp without spending big cash then I will have succeeded in my original goal. For me this is not about ultimate performance but it is about developing my knowledge and skills, I love my Honda and can't think of a better car to try and develop.
