Oil Leak in intake tube and Spark Plugs

Post by archyman »

Hi All. I have allways known that the oil vapor that comes from head cover to intake tube is a normal thing, but today i saw an ej9 that is in very good condition and there was no oil collected in the airbox compartment.
It was so clean that it got me thinking about my case.
I have the d16z9 IM and a custome intake. The tube goes down to the headlight and when i remove the filter i can see a little bit of oil collected at the bottom of the tube.
The other car owner said that there must be a problem with the segments or something else with my engine and this worries me a lot.
Please share your experience on this oil vapor? What is the normal and what the abnormal situation?
Thanks!
Here is a pic of the intake position:

For sure oil it is not normal in intake tube.
Where is the tube that comes from headcover to intake tube? The photos are small.

I have replaced the oil during the weekend and had the chance to look more into the oil leak problem. However i did not open to check the PCV valve because it would have cost me a lot of time. My mechanics once again said
that the oil vapor and oil coating in the intake seems normal.
I am not so sure so here are some pics:

I think it is lot oil there.
Like you have bad turbo.
Especially the strange thing is the leak from upper breathing tube (breather hose in the picture). It is suppose that from this tube the engine sucks air and not the opposite.

PCV valve after many years of use it logical that can be clogged.
What looks like an OEM PCV valve inside.

How mush is the engine's oil consumption?
If it is high it would wise to make a compression test to see if the pistons rings in good shape.
Because it is possible from worn piston rings to have blow by effect and from that you have oil in intake tube

Betek, this doesn't sound good at all :?
I don't remember the car needing additional oil between services. However i have previously made one mistake by putting too much oil in the engine (3,75l) and this caused oil leak from the bottom of engine. When the oil reached optimal quantity loosing oil stopped and everything seemed OK.
I will definitely check the PCV next saturday.
How do you make compression test? Measuring air pressure trough spark plug channels?
I will dig into this and post the results.

If you put 3.75 litres of oil it is too much.
And maybe that was the reason of oil in the intake.
The oil capacity of d14 with oil filter is 3.3 litres. Without oil filter 3 litres.

Now,the compression test is easy job.
But you will need a tool for this purpose.
Unplug the spark plugs and put there the compression tool and crank the engine few times. (also unplug the injectors connectors when you do the test)

To me it also looks like a high amount of oil in intake piping. Keep diagnosing and let us know how it goes. :)
